Home The Person Behind the Moʻo

I didn't choose marketing.
The work chose me.

I'm Makanaohaililani Waikiki, founder of ForTheMoʻo. I'm Kanaka Maoli, born and raised in Keaukaha on Hawaiʻi Island, and ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi is my first language. When you work with ForTheMoʻo, you work with me. So here's who that is.

Makanaohaililani Waikiki

I have never thought of myself as a marketer first. I'm a storyteller. Marketing is just the vehicle I use to carry a story to the people it was meant for.

I grew up in the nonprofit world. I was twelve when I started working with my family's land stewardship organization in Waipiʻo, learning early that the health of a community and the health of the ʻāina are the same thing. That is where my sense of kuleana comes from, and it never left.

Everything I've built since has come back to the same three things: community, culture, and story.

Over the years I've done this work from a lot of angles. Community development. Corporate marketing. Teaching. I learned the polished, mainland marketing playbook from the inside, and I learned exactly where it stops working for Hawaiʻi.

I led marketing for a Hawaiʻi nonprofit, where I was named Employee of the Year and taught the Digital Creators program, helping local business owners learn to market themselves. I've spoken on stages, including a keynote at Western Oregon University. Every step clarified the same thing: I do my best work with the small businesses and community organizations I actually belong to.

ForTheMoʻo grew out of that truth. People kept asking me to help them tell their story, and I kept saying yes, until it became the work I was meant to be doing all along. I named it for the moʻo: the guardian, the keeper of lineage and story. That is the standard I hold myself to with every client.

"I'm most alive when I'm helping a Hawaiʻi business be seen the way they actually are. Not a mainland version of them. Them."

That is the whole point of ForTheMoʻo. I'm not here to hand you someone else's framework. I'm here to listen, find what's real, and help you tell it in a way that actually connects with your community. If that's the kind of partner you've been looking for, we're going to get along just fine.

What Guides the Work

Four values.
No compromises.

Moʻolelo
Story

Every organization has a story worth telling. Story is not one piece of the strategy. It is the strategy.

Pilina
Connection

Marketing is not advertising. It is relationship. If it doesn't build connection, it isn't doing its job.

Kuleana
Responsibility

We tell the truth, do the work with integrity, and refuse to flatten culture into decoration.

Pono
Rightness

We don't trade cultural integrity for a viral moment. The work is done right, or it isn't done at all.

Recognition

Let's build
something real.

If your organization is rooted in Hawaiʻi and ready to show up for real, let's talk story.
